Consent Is Sexy, Clarity Is Sexier

Consent Is Sexy, Clarity Is Sexier

Everyone in the lifestyle agrees that consent matters. Fewer people talk about how to do it well. Good consent is not awkward or clinical. Done right, it is confident, warm and very attractive.

Consent is enthusiastic

The question is not "Did they say no?" The question is "Did they clearly say yes?" Look for a real, happy yes — words, a smile, someone leaning in. Silence, a shrug or a nervous laugh is not a yes. When you are unsure, ask. If you are still unsure, the answer is no.

Consent is for each step

A yes to a dance is not a yes to a kiss. A yes to a kiss is not a yes to anything more. A yes last month is not a yes tonight. Check in as things change: "Is this good?" "Do you want to keep going?" Short questions like these take two seconds and build a lot of trust.

Consent can change at any moment

Anyone can change their mind at any time, even in the middle of something. When someone says stop, everybody stops at once, without sulking or asking why. Treat a changed mind with kindness. That is how people learn they are safe with you.

Both partners count

When you meet a couple, you need a yes from both of them. When you are part of a couple, you and your partner agree before you say yes to someone else. Never try to talk someone round through their partner.

How to ask without killing the mood

Asking does not have to sound like a legal question. Try:

"I'd love to kiss you. Would you like that?"

"Do you two want to come and dance with us?"

"What are you in the mood for tonight?"

A confident, friendly question shows that you are relaxed and respectful. Those are two of the most attractive things you can be.

How to say no with grace

Saying no is a skill too. Keep it short, kind and clear: "Thank you, but not tonight." "You're lovely, but we're just watching tonight." You don't owe anyone a reason. A clear no is more polite than a vague maybe that leaves people waiting.

How to hear no with grace

When someone says no to you, the best reply is "No problem, have a great night." Then really let it go. Don't ask again later, don't ask their friends, and don't take it personally. People talk, and the couple who handles a no gracefully is the couple everybody wants to meet.

Alcohol and consent don't mix

A person who is very drunk cannot give real consent. If someone is slurring, stumbling or not making sense, it is not the time. Get them water, find their partner or tell the host.

Speak up for others

If you see someone who looks uncomfortable, or someone who is ignoring a no, tell the host or the staff. Looking after each other is part of what makes a lifestyle community feel safe. On CouplesBlend you can also report a member from their profile, and our team will look into it.

The bottom line

Clear questions, clear answers, and respect for every answer. That is all consent is. Do it well and every night gets better — for you, and for everyone you meet.
